The VK Commodore was one of the first cars built by the Perkins Engineering team led by former Formula 1 driver and multiple Bathurst winner Perkins, with Perkins joined by 1967 Formula 1 world champion Hulme in the car at endurance events at Wellington and Bathurst.
Perkins and Hulme finished first and second in the 1988 Australian Grand Prix Group A support race in Adelaide, in the formative years of the Perkins Engineering team which went on to win the Bathurst 1000 three times.
