The story behind Nissan’s ‘Godzilla’ Skylines

The Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 dominated Australian touring cars in the early 1990s, with its crushing performances leading to the car being nicknamed 'Godzilla'.

The Gibson Motorsport-run turbocharged Skyline GT-R R32s won both the Australian Touring Car Championship and Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992, dominating in the latter years of the Group A era of Australian touring cars.

The Skyline GT-R R32s were devastatingly quick, featuring all-wheel-drive and a 2.6-litre twin-turbo straight six engine.

The 1991 and 1992 Skyline GT-R R32s were restored to their original liveries and specifications, returning to the track at the 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

Alan Heaphy was team manager of Gibson Motorsport. He now helps preserve the Skylines and appeared in the Grand Marquee alongside host Charlie Barlow to discuss the history of the cars at the 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
