Ford legend Johnson switched from a Falcon to a Mustang when Australian touring cars adopted the international Group A regulations in 1985. The second of Johnson’s two Mustangs debuted in the latter stages of that year, taking part in the Adelaide non-championship support race to the grand prix. Johnson led every lap from pole position to win the race, in what would be his only win in the Mustang.

Johnson raced the Mustang throughout 1986, including to fourth place in the Bathurst 1000, before he switched to the Ford Sierra from 1987. The Mustang now belongs in the Bowden’s collection, heading to the 2025 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival alongside the 1989 Bathurst 1000-winning Dick Johnson Racing Ford Sierra RS500 and Holden Dealer Team ‘last of the Big Bangers’ Holden VK Commodore.

The Mustang, Sierra and Commodore will be on track together in the Touring Car Legends category, alongside other Group A, Group C and V8 Supercar touring cars.

The 2025 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival will once again feature various categories, ranging from Formula 1 cars, V8 Supercars, sportscars, touring cars, motorbikes and more with the action non-stop without a break in track activity at any stage of the day. Off track there will be car displays, kids' zones, bars and food trucks, exhibitors and traders, activations and more, in a picnic in the park setting.
