TOUGH DAY SEES CONTENDERS BATTLE IN SHANNONS ADELAIDE RALLY


Ben Calder and Steve Glenney will take a comfortable lead of more than 1 minute 40 seconds into the final day of the Shannons Adelaide Rally, thanks to a dominant day in the Northern Hills stages on Friday.
Overnight leaders by just nine seconds, the pair stormed away from the field as the field tackled the famous Anstey Hill, Chain of Ponds, and iconic Castambul stages near the Northern suburbs.
A dominant day saw the duo sweep every stage of the day to take a crushing lead in what could be an event-breaker for their rivals.
It was a turn-up for the Rally after fans witnessed one of the tightest legs on record a day prior, just tenths of a second splitting the leading cars throughout Thursday’s stages.
The Mitsubishi Lancer combination were, however, aided by the unfortunate demise of their nearest rivals early in the day.
Tim Ramages and Lisi Phillips had traded the lead with the similar Mitsubishi throughout Thursday’s stages however developed engine dramas during the first run on Chain of Ponds – forcing their withdrawal.
As a result the leaders’ margin was more than 1m40 heading into the critical final day in the Adelaide Hills.
The battle for second was a tight one; waged between the Subaru WRX STi of Richard Lovell and Bernie Webb and the Martin Farkas / Tristan Catford BMW M3.
While the Subaru held the top spot throughout the day, the pair were never split by more than ten seconds in a compelling fight for the final spot on the podium, just 8.5 seconds splitting the pair at the end of the day.
The drama wasn’t limited to the Modern Competition class, with the Classic Competition also evolving into a close battle.
Overnight leaders Nick and Jacob Streckeisen (Porsche 944) maintained their margin throughout the first three stages of Friday’s leg however struck dramas on the first run through Castambul, turbo issues ending their rally.
That handed the lead to Matt Selley and Hamish Mckendrick, who head into the final day’s stages with their Hartage / BMW H35 taking a comfortable if not entirely safe 56-second margin over the Roger Patterson / Richaed Geue Porsche 911.
Roger Lomman and Annie Bainbridge sit third in their Datsun 240z however are just 14 seconds behind second place.
In Modern Challenge, after ending up as overnight Rally leaders Justin Perkins and Andrien Brabbins failed to complete the first stage of the day, handing the lead to Linden and Tristan Reynolds.
The Reynolds boys won the first four stages and in doing so creating a 15 second lead over Todd and Geoff Carruthers.
The Carruthers pair then struck back, beating the Reynolds’ in the next four stages and winning three of them. In doing so they nibbled the lead down by 6.7s by the end of the penultimate stage.
They then took the lead when the leading Skyline dropped more than 25 minutes on the final stage, the Curruthers’ duo taking the lead. Meyles / Meyls (Mitsubishi) and Sinclair / Radziszewski (BMW) sit second and third, respectively.
In Classic Challenge, overnight leader Hugh Feggans and Jim Callahan 3.3s lead was under threat straight away, dropping the lead to Karl Von Sanden and Alexander Visintin on the fourth stage when they lost 30s.
Feggans and Callahan charged back into contention late in the day with a series of stages wins, closing the gap to the leading Porsche to just 22.1 seconds heading into the final stages.
The Adelaide Rally field tackles 10 trials to conclude the rally on Saturday, including the iconic stages in the inner Adelaide Hills around Stirling, Mount Lofty and Basket Range.
The Rally concludes at Victoria Park with a dash around the Sprint Circuit to complete the 32 stage event with the winners to be crowned in front of the Heritage grandstand.
